Cut Paper Lanterns
A Look at Testimonies
A couple of years ago, I was a fortunate recipient of an artist residency. Three writers, a potter, and I spent the entire month of October at the beautiful Anderson Center near Red Wing, Minnesota. The five of us lodged in a stately old mansion filled with books and memorabilia. We learned from one another.
In addition to lovely living quarters, I also received a studio with ample light, a sink, and a space heater. A month of uninterrupted work time is a great gift. Even before I went, I decided to use my time to incubate ideas. I began by looking at Quaker and Benedictine testimonies of simplicity, stewardship, and community. In time, I may make a series of paper lanterns that each will represent a testimony.
Here is one of the lanterns I made at the Anderson Center. This one is on the theme of community.
. . . and this one on simplicity.
